Senior Alex Dealey has been getting a lot of attention recently for her creativity and artistic acuity. Dealey is something of a visual-art renaissance woman, but it is her fascinating and compelling comics which prompted The Colt to pick her brain. Read on to discover more about Dealey’s inspirations, aspirations and favorite works.
The Colt: How long have you been an artist?
Alex Dealey: The earliest comic that I ever wrote was when I was five years old and it was called Cyber-dog and Cyber-cat. It was about a mutated dog and a cybernetic cat who were superheroes.
TC: What motivates you to do art?
AD: I’ve kind of always had a natural drive for storytelling. I’ve always loved creating entire worlds with their own people and culture and languages. It’s something I’ve always done and something I plan always to do.
TC: What types of art do you participate in?
AD: My primary mediums as an artist are digital work and animation.
TC: Do you plan on pursuing a career in the arts?
AD: Absolutely. I want to be a writer for the rest of my life. I want to publish graphic novels and I’m also hoping to work with Nickelodeon with this cartoon idea I have called Meet the Vampires.
TC: What is your most prized piece of art?
AD: My personal favorites include: the Author’s Society ,which is one of the long running webcomics I do right now. I have another one that touches on spiritual beliefs called The Spirit’s Journey.
TC: Were you motivated by any other artists?
AD: I wrote the first comic I ever wrote because my dad is an artist. He always read superhero comics and he could draw, what was to me, some of the most amazing stuff I had ever seen, so I wanted to be just as good as my dad. That was kind of my inspiration to start writing at that age. Further down the line I was inspired by other cartoonists and comic writers such as Butch Hartman and Jhonen Vasquez.
TC: Has your artwork ever been showcased?
AD: I’ve had pieces put into student art shows at school. I also have a Deviant Art account online where I post a majority of my art and I have websites built for my comics: The Author’s Society and Not Quite Virgins.
