The first chess club meeting of the 2013-2014 school year was held on October 1st of 2013. Approximately 25 people attended the meeting in which they played matches and went over the chess club itinerary.
The motivation behind the inauguration of the AHS Chess Club was President Javier Salazar’s deep proclivity for the game.
“I decided to start chess club because I’d always had a passion for chess ever since I got my first set when I was 12 years old. I noticed there wasn’t a chess club in AHS but one at Martin so I spoke with Mr. Picart to begin the process of creating the club.” Salazar, junior, said.
Salazar, whose passion and hobby has a variety of unexpected advantages, is hoping the club’s benefits will go beyond the board.
“We are not only helping students improve their chess skills, but also helping them perform better in all aspects of life.” Salazar said.
Some of these boons include expanded comprehension and an overall healthier psyche.
“Chess increases a person’s I.Q., prevents Alzheimer’s disease, increases creativity, improves memory, improves problem-solving and reading skills, and teaches planning and foresight.” Salazar said.
Due to the clear enthusiasm of its founder and the intellectual stimulation the game provides, many members eagerly await upcoming meetings and events.
“Chess club was everything I wanted and even more and I am looking forward to the game night and every meeting from now on.” Hari Kosuru, senior, said.
Chess club is also planning on competing in tournaments within the club and against other schools.
The next chess club meeting will be on October 15th and the meetings thereafter will be every other Tuesday starting November 5th.
