The AHS art scene

“Broken Bird” by Itzel Cortez was published in the Spring 2014 literary magazine.

Texas is a state where sports are the primary focus, so every once in a while it’s nice to shake it up a bit and look at the students that excel off of the field. I sat down with four IB art students who are highly regarded by their art teachers, Dave Seymour and Joan Cauley, to find out more about their passion.

The Colt: How long have you been drawing, painting, etc.?

Sam Crawford: This is actually my first year.

Anna Trujillo: I’ve been drawing since freshman year.

Itzel Cortez: Since 7th grade.

TC: What is your preferred style of art?

SC: I like painting on canvases.

AT: I like impressionism.

IC: I like water colors.

TC: Have you ever competed in any competitions?

SC: Yes actually, I am in the Martin Luther King, Jr. T-shirt competition.

AT: No.

IC: No.

TC: Are you going to pursue art as a career?

SC: No, I don’t think so.

AT: No, it’s really just a hobby.

IC: No, I don’t see it as a lifestyle.

TC: What got you started and what was your inspiration?

SC: The school’s art program.

AT: Mainly just my teachers, but I really love art and that’s a big inspiration for me.

IC: The world around me is my inspiration, I feel like art can overcome everything.
