Disappointingly Unoriginal Fun Film

A weekend ago, my friend and I were intrigued by this interesting looking chick flick, and so we decided to see it together. What I expected from “The DUFF” was a funny, cute movie which simultaneously introduced slightly serious topics to the viewers, and I got exactly what I bargained for.

I didn’t expect anything groundbreaking from a movie called “The DUFF” of course, but while it was a fun experience, it felt like there was something missing from this movie that kind of left it dry. Even with that being said, it is one of the more intriguing romantic comedies that I’ve seen in the past couple of years, and it is a good movie for a laugh.

Alright, so what did I like about this movie? Most of the comedy in it was downright hilarious, and some of the jokes had me in tears. Though the characters were a bit stereotypical characteristically wise, they were a lot of fun, and though it took me a while to warm up to some of them, I turned out really caring about them. I did also like the message that the movie was sending; it you’re weird, just own it! Don’t let society try to model you into what they think you should be. I felt like our lead female character Bianca Piper (played by Mae Whitman) was a pretty good protagonist. She was funny, interesting, and had very obvious flaws that a lot of girls, younger and older, could relate to. On the other hand, our other lead Wesley Rush (played by Robbie Amell) had something missing from his character that I wish they had explored more.

Alright, the negatives. Some of the jokes didn’t work at all, and, as I said before, the characters were fairly stereotypical. Though I did end up warming up to them, it took me too long to do so. Also, from the first scene, I already knew who was going to end up with who and how exactly the story was going to end; it was pretty obvious. I just would’ve liked to see this movie do something different.

Overall, I would give this movie a 6 out of 10. I definitely think that you can wait until it comes out on DVD and rent it, but it is worth it if you’re just looking for a cute romantic comedy that just lets you forget about all your troubles for about 2 hours.
