Colts eagerly await completion of new activity center

Construction is underway on the multi-purpose activity center, designed as a versatile indoor space for athletics and student activities. This is the architect’s rendering of the MAC.

Ground was broken in the fall for a new multi-purpose activity center (MAC) on the west side of campus. As a result of the $663 million bond passed in 2014, every high school in the district will get a new activity center for athletics and fine arts in order to bring AISD up to par with other districts in the area.

The MAC at AHS will be over 77,000 square feet and will feature a 60-yard football field with a padded perimeter, marked for football, baseball and softball, with drop down nets installed to allow up to three athletic events to occur simultaneously. It will also have a 7,500 square foot weight room, and a training room. Other facilities, such as locker rooms, restrooms and office space will also be built into the MAC.

While the project is set to be complete in July, construction is slightly ahead of schedule. Before winter break the pilings had been drilled and the concrete poured, and during the break, supports and girders were placed for the frame.

According to the district’s bond website, each MAC has been designed as a “versatile indoor space for athletics and student activities”. Students, faculty and administration are excited about the addition and are looking forward to using its many great features.
