New movie tweaks classic with a touch of zombies
I had the good fortune to see the new movie “Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” during its opening weekend; but while my sister and mom loved the movie, I only liked it.
This movie isn’t for everyone.
Going into it, you have to know what you’re getting yourself into. It’s literally “Pride and Prejudice” with zombie aspects for a slightly different storyline. Some people will expect an entirely serious storyline acquainted with the horror genre. If you go in wanting that, you probably won’t enjoy this movie as much as you thought. This comes from a book (not the original Jane Austen classic but an unrelated book) that’s intention was to be a little silly but also a little serious.
The casting is the best part of this flick. Lily James as Elizabeth Bennet was an incredible choice and is definitely one of my favorite castings of Elizabeth ever. For me, she completely stole the show. Sam Riley also does a justifiable Mr. Darcy, being an asshole while also being soft at heart, as the role originally called for. Matt Smith as Mr. Collins was downright hilarious and just a perfect casting choice. I’d like to give whoever cast this movie an award, because they did a fabulous job.
As great as the casting is and as much as I love seeing the Bennett sisters kick some ass, there are many flaws with the movie. The running time is around two hours, but it feels a lot longer than that due to the dragging storyline. I felt like the second act was like filler in a TV show more than plot advancement. You think that it’s going to pick up in the third act, but it really doesn’t. It’s just your standard romance flick and very predictable overall. The beginning is really what got me excited for the rest of the movie, but the rest fell flat.
I don’t think this movie really strived to be anything really amazing or groundbreaking, but given the material, I don’t think it could have been. With that being said, I just wish they had gone into more depth about certain plot elements and characters.
I wouldn’t see this movie in theatres if I were you, but I wouldn’t write it off either. Rent it at Redbox when it comes out, you may have a good time with it. But for me, I felt like there wasn’t enough there for it to be more than a 5/10.
