Right, left, jump, spin and sing! The AHS varsity show choir, the Choraliers, has been working hard on their new routine for competition season under the direction of Mason Barlow.  

“I usually find the inspiration for my routines through the songs,” Barlow said. “I listen for songs that I think the kids will like, and then find other songs that work within that.”

Their routine not only includes harder moves, but also has a collection of kids from other electives like band and orchestra playing for their set. They have two trombones, a trumpet, percussion, piano, electric guitar and a bass guitar. They also bring in a group of percussionists for their closer “The World Is Ours”.

“The music is really catchy and exciting and the band is really talented,” Isaac James, sophomore and bass guitarist for the band, said. 

This year’s choreography is more complicated than past routines. The directors flew in a choreographer who attended the Young Americans College of Performing Arts. He worked with the kids and blocked their whole routine in three days at the beginning of the school year.

“The choreo this year is harder because we have so many returning students who have been doing this for years, so we are able to include some more complex moves,” Barlow said.   

The kids in Choraliers have a lot of fun working on the routines and getting to perform them. Show Choir is a place where kids can come together and sing together, but it also adds that element of dance and that really helps tell the story of the songs.

“Choraliers is like a big family, a lot of us have been in it for two or more years and the relationships you develop with these people are really strong,” Dwight Williams, junior, said.

The Choraliers plan on performing their set in three fairly local show choir competitions this spring.
