Dicaprio finally wins Oscar, shuts down internet memes once and for all

After 20 years, Leonardo Dicaprio finally won an Oscar for his role in “The Revenant”.

At last, after more than two decades of enduring boundless internet memes that mocked his inability to get an Academy Award, Leonardo Dicaprio’s dedication to his craft has finally snagged him the coveted Oscar for Best Actor in his role of a vengeful frontiersman in the late 2015 blockbuster, “The Revenant”.

The sixth time seems to have been the charm for the actor, as he has been previously nominated for his works in “Blood Diamond”, “The Aviator”, and “Wolf of Wall Street” at the Oscars in years past, but consecutively failed to bring home the bacon.

Following the annual award show, every year one could count on going on any form of social media and witnessing the endless taunting of poor old Leo with a collection of memes, which ranged from gifs that zeroed in on his face as he realized he had lost, or internet-made comics that featured scenes of Dicaprio in previous films, but with hilarious captions.

On the actual night of this year’s Oscar’s, as the nominees were announced for Best Actor, the room was dead silent as the crowd and viewers alike awaited for the verdict, leaning on the edges of their seats with breaths held in anticipation. The moment Dicaprio was named winner, the dead silence of the room was quickly replaced with roars of triumph and celebration, as Leo walked to the stage with a pep in his step and shattered the hopes of internet trolls around the world who wished to continue the tradition of making fun of his failures.

In a true display of modesty, Dicaprio not only thanked just about anyone who had any part to do with his success, but took advantage of the worldwide platform he was given to take a political charge and educate viewers on the expanding threat of global warming.

“Making “The Revenant” was about man’s relationship to the natural world,” DiCaprio said. “A world that we collectively felt in 2015 as the hottest year in recorded history. Our production needed to move to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow. Climate change is real, it is happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating.”

While Dicaprio’s sentiments were welcomed and heartwarming, you’d think he would’ve had a more dramatic and impactful speech, considering he had over 20 years to perfect it. Nevertheless, it was touching to witness someone take a political stance on an important issue.

While the Leonardo Dicaprio Oscar Meme is now officially dead, that doesn’t take away from how hilarious the gifs and pictures made after Leo’s shortcomings are, so in the spirit of  nostalgia, here are some of the meme highlights shared on Facebook, Tumblr, and the Twitter-sphere!
