Your Lady Colts basketball team has started the season out with a BANG with a record of 12-6. With an average of 61 points per game, they continue to dominate their opponents. As district play approaches, the Lady Colts head basketball coach, Natasha Newsome, explains what she’s looking forward to the most.

“Playoffs,” Newsome said. “That’s also my goal, trying to get those wins in order to get to playoffs.”

As for the players, they’re excited for district play for a different reason.

“I’m excited to show off how hard we have been working throughout the non-district season,” senior Melinda Platt, shooting guard, said. “I’m ready to win some games, enough to get us to playoffs.”

Every team has one thing they exceed at the most whether it’s passing, shooting or playing defense. The Lady Colts work hard in every aspect of basketball, but feel that they excel in one thing in particular.

“We have good communication and the way we move the ball up and down the court,” senior Courtney Cleveland, forward, said.

In addition to things they do well, Platt said there is always room for improvements.

“The one thing we need to work on the most is our defense,” she said. “We’re a pretty good offensive match, but every year defense is our weak link especially with our communication.”

It’s not just about learning and taking away certain skills from the game. Life lessons can be learned as well.

“I want them to know that they can achieve their goals,” Newsome said. “When they put their mind to it, and they work hard they can do anything they want to do. I want them to recognize the progress they’ve made and how their hard work has gotten them where they are today.”

The Lady Colts play their next game Friday against Lamar. They are looking forward to the rest of the season with full intentions on going to playoffs.
