Slam Poetry Club hosts fall showcase
Polite snaps, low lighting, a full house and some tears signified the finale of the Slam Poetry Showcase.
Friday night, Slam Poetry Club held its second showcase with many poets performing original pieces at The Drop, a student run coffee shop. The club was founded last year by seniors Virginia Bartin, Nafisa Hassan and Lauren Grambort for their IB CAS project.
“I feel really great about how it went and we had a full house,” Bartin said. “We worked really hard with the performers.”
The showcase ran from 7 to 9 p.m. and the performers were from all grade levels, including English teacher and club sponsor Angela Lanciaux who performed an original work.
“I’ve always liked acting and performing,” Hassan said. “With every English assignment I’ve had since middle school, if there was a creative element it was poetry. That inspired me and I found my calling to run Slam Poetry Club.”
This passion is what lead to the creation of the club and what helped shape the success of the showcase as well. Through multiple workshops and rigorous practices, the performers were well prepared to step onto the stage and perform the work that they had put their effort into.
“We really wanted to create a safe spot for a lot of people who were afraid to express themselves, for those who have a creative soul and and wanted to inspire [others],” Grambort said.
The club started with six members but this year they have increased to 25 and hope to grow more as plans are made for a spring showcase. Students interested in performing should look for announcements by the club.
“We would love new members,” Bartin said, “Please come to Slam Poetry Club every Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m. in C109.”
