Senior Ismael Plata is a proud papa. His cow Betty gave birth February 17 and Plata was there to help her 91-pound calf take his first steps. The Colt sat down with him to find out more about the experience.
The Colt: What did you name him?
Ismael Plata: I named him Big Bert.
TC: Were you present for the birth?
IP: Yes, I was there when Betty first went into labor at 8 a.m.
TC: How was the experience?
IP: I liked it, it was nice with all the students and teachers being there.
TC: Did you help Betty?
IP: No, I just watched since Betty was able to give birth all on her own.
TC: How long is the average cow pregnancy?
IP: 281 days which is the same as humans.
TC: Why did you decide to breed Betty?
IP: Well for shows, it’s better to have a cow and their calf so my breeder and I artificially inseminated her with the sperm of a bull, Triple D Tank.
TC: What’s going to happen to Betty and Big Bert at the end of the year?
IP: I’m going to be keeping them both and they’ll be staying at my dad’s farm where we’re going to get more animals and continue breeding.
TC: How is Big Bert doing?
IP: He’s doing good and he’s healthy.
