When school started in August students were intrigued by a new classroom full of pianos in D hall. As part of the Fine Arts/Dual Language Academy, the piano class is being offered on campus for the first time. Shortly after the start of the year, piano teacher LK Fletcher posted a sign outside her room offering Piano Therapy for anyone interested. The Colt sat down with Ms. Fletcher to find out more about her offer.
The Colt: What is piano therapy?
LK Fletcher: It is time where students and staff can come in and simply just play piano for fun or to learn.
TC: Why did you start offering piano therapy?
LF: Many people came in and asked if they could play. Some wanted lessons and some just wanted to play to pass the time. I came up with piano therapy because I got so many requests.
TC: What are the benefits of playing piano?
LF: I’ve read studies that say playing music provides a lot of brain stimulation and dopamine.
TC: Who can participate in piano therapy?
LF: Literally anyone, whether it’s students or staff.
Fletcher said there is no experience necessary to participate in piano therapy. Students can come to D102 during either lunch with a pass or drop in after school, and staff can come at anytime.
